Getting started

Buy a plan, download the archive from the customer portal, upload it to your host, and open /install/.

Overview

FileShare is a self-hosted PHP and MySQL application for secure file sharing and a client portal. There is no mandatory monthly storage subscription from FileShare.

Requirements

  • PHP 8.2 or newer with PDO MySQL, mbstring, fileinfo, openssl, json, session, and sodium.
  • MySQL 8 or MariaDB 10.4 or newer, utf8mb4.
  • Apache with mod_rewrite, or Nginx pointed at the front controller.
  • Writable config and storage directories.

Installation

  1. Download FileShare from your customer portal.
  2. Upload and extract the files on your host.
  3. Create a MySQL database.
  4. Open /install/ and complete requirements, database, and storage.
  5. Enter the FS-* license key from your purchase email or portal. FileShare activates the current domain automatically.
  6. Create the application administrator and finish installation.

Offline activation with a signed entitlement token is available only under Advanced / Offline activation when the server cannot reach the license service.

Configuration

After installation, settings live in the admin area. Demo mode blocks license, mail, storage, update, and destructive backup changes.

File management

Create folders, upload in chunks, restore from trash, and keep checksums. Uploads resume after an interrupted connection.

Sharing

Share links can expire, use a password, limit downloads, or work once. Guests do not see the rest of the library.

File requests

A file request asks someone to upload into a folder you choose, with its own limits and optional password.

Users and roles

Owner and Admin manage the site. Manager works with files, shares, requests, and the audit log. User uploads and shares. Viewer downloads. Checks are enforced on the server.

Quotas

A user quota can inherit the role, be unlimited, or be a size limit. The limit is checked when an upload starts and when the last chunk is saved.

Branding

Set the product name, logo, colors, and footer. Personal keeps the FileShare credit. Higher plans can hide it.

SMTP

Business and higher can send mail through your own SMTP server. Store the password only in the application settings, not in documentation or public files.

S3 storage

Agency can store files on S3-compatible storage. Credentials stay on your server.

Two-factor authentication

Administrators can require an authenticator code. Recovery codes are shown once.

Sessions

Review signed-in browsers and revoke one you do not recognize.

Backups

Create a backup before updates. Demo mode does not allow destructive backup actions.

Updates

Updates are signed. Eligibility for newer packages lasts 12 months from purchase. Renewal is optional.

Licensing

The purchased FileShare version keeps working after the 12-month updates and support period ends. Renewal is optional. That expiry does not stop uploads, sharing, or sign-in, and it does not delete files. It only ends eligibility for newer updates and support.

A refund, chargeback, explicit revocation, invalid signature, tampering, or domain mismatch is separate. Those states can stop new commercial actions. They do not delete the files, users, shares, or database on your server.

The customer package contains only the public verification key. The vendor private signing key is never included and is never stored on the customer installation.

License transfer

Move a production activation from the customer portal when you change hosts. The plan’s domain limit still applies.

Hosting

Point the domain at the folder that contains index.php. PHP 8.2 or 8.3 is enough. Raise upload limits if you send very large single requests. Chunked uploads still fit inside the PHP post limit.

Security

Use HTTPS. Keep the admin password private. Do not send passwords or API secrets in a support report.

Troubleshooting

  • A blank installer usually means PHP is below 8.2 or sodium is missing.
  • An invalid license usually means the FS-* key was mistyped, the license was revoked, or the server could not reach api.ownfileshare.com.
